2019May 19 – Sunday Saunter at Creston’s Triple Falls Sanctuary
John Muir…“I don’t like either the word [hike] or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains – not ‘hike!”
Residents were invited to saunter in Creston’s own back yard and learn about plants, trees, flowers, and maybe even some wildlife along the way at Triple Falls in Creston. Before heading out for the saunter in the woods we all enjoyed a primitive camp breakfast at the former bear hunters’ cabin.
Here were the details:
BREAKFAST BEFORE THE HIKE – starts at 8:30 a.m.
- We’ll have coffee, eggs, bacon, and biscuits prepared for you around the campfire at the Triple Falls cabin.
- Bring your own coffee cup, plate, and fork – it’s a no-trash zone!
- Volunteers will handle all the fixings and clean up while you enjoy your hike.
- Feel free to join us for the breakfast even if you don’t hike. You can cool your toes in the creek or “sit a spell” in the woods by the falls while the hikers are sauntering.
HIKE/SAUNTER – starts at 10:00 a.m.
- The hike will be led by Vince Gentry (C-12/Berry Lane), a Crestonite noted for his knowledge of native plants in and around our woods. He’ll identify plants in bloom as well as others in various life cycles.
- The hike will leave from the Triple Falls cabin and take about 1.5 hours.
- Wear substantial shoes, hiking shoes if you have them.
- This is considered medium level of difficulty; there will be creek crossings, up hills and down hills.
- Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and plenty of water to consume on the walk.
- Even if you can’t come to the pre-hike breakfast, you are welcome to join up for the hike.
It was a delicious, fun, informative experience for all. The weather was perfect in the low 70’s with a soft breeze. We all look forward to a similiar event in the Fall. Always something happening in Creston!
